Benjamin Williams

Away from Safe Harbor (2005)

A friend that I had not seen for several years gave me a call one day so that we could meet up and he could tell me about his wild new plans to build a blimp and sail in it. He also planned to record it and asked me to see if his idea would inspire me to write any music for the video. The idea of such a challenge was the starting point for this piece, although this work refers to the sea, not the sky. In the first movement, a storm is heard in the low rumbling of the piano. The desperate cry of the cello in the second movement is that of lost hope. But the last movement is one of triumph and success of returning home, just as he did after his flight.
