Maiden’s Lament and Praise (2013)
When I first received the request by percussionist Josh Craft to write a piece for cello and marimba, I was immediately hooked. The warm low sounds of the marimba with the rich baritone/tenor of the cello seemed an ideal combination. What surprised me was that as I began writing I had less the sense of a deep masculine piece, but rather an almost Siren-like allure. The opening cello melody drew me into the undulating harmonic undercurrent of the marimba. Soon thereafter, both instruments strike up a playful dance that is teasingly passed back and forth. By the end I find myself wrapped up in both the lows and the highs, eagerly anticipating wherever the music takes me.
