The Earthly Paradise (2006)
The Earthly Paradise is a celebration of the short time in which all people are able to live on Earth and a reminder to enjoy that time to the fullest before it is gone. Having recently lost two close family members, I wanted to draw attention to the idea that although there may be trying times in life, there is ultimately a need for joy and celebration. These trying times can be felt in this work by a dissonant theme first heard in the trombones. The primary theme, however, portrays a vigorous, joyful feeling several times throughout the piece before it comes to a close with serene, low chords. This quiet ending suggests a sense of satisfaction with this Earthly Paradise.
