Mary Carolyn Davies is probably not a name that often comes up on a list of poets that first come to mind. In fact, it is rather difficult to find more than three of her published poems, and those in obscure places. Nevertheless, when I ran across this set of four short, yet moving texts, I stored them away for when I may someday have an opportunity to set them to music. When the time finally arose for a set of songs for Mezzo-Soprano, I knew exactly where to turn: to Davies and her emotional expression of a girl's songs. Movements
